MAKES GOOD SENSE Never has a proposal made more sense than J. J. Tarlton’s recent suggestion that Rutherford Coun ty substitute three large high school plants for the ten now operated here. The idea is wise educationally, socially and economically. It makes good sense educational ly because three large plants would provide a wider range of subjects for the high school age students throughout Rutherford, maxing it possible to build up large libraries and laboratory facilities that would not be feas ible in smaller schools. It makes good sense socially be cause the larger and better schools . would raise the standards of edu cational advantages offered chil dren from all parts of this large county. It makes good sense economically because, obviously, three buildings can be built and maintained at less cost than ten. It is wise in this direction, too, because the amount of construction necessary for these three would be no more than what is already needed to bring the school system up to standard via the “patchwork” method. The question, of course, isr Where will the money come from? It will have to come from a bond issue. Natural antipathy to higher taxes jeopardize the pro gram at this point. 4nd that is where the county government should face up to a vital and touchy matter—the question of a revaluation of county property. A realistic evaluation might make it possible to handle a bon'd issue without hiking the tax rate.—Edi torial in Rutherford County News.
